The Cove

A strange man came into my work promoting the movie, The Cove. I told him I would help him promote, and stuck a flyer to the front of my cash register.

I went to Embarcadero Cinema to watch The Cove. I really wanted to see what kind of people would show up. A producer and director would be present for a Q&A following the screening.

When I got to the theater The Cove was sold out. I decided to leave. Then I thought, "Well, maybe" and turned around.

A man asked me if I wanted to buy a ticket. I bought it. Then we talked. Then another man poked his head out of the theater and asked the man I was talking to if he needed a ticket. The man I was talking to said, "Yes" and took the ticket. Then two other people were wandering around looking lost and the man I was talking to asked them if they needed tickets. The two lost people said, "Yes" and bought the two tickets.

"Hey!" I said to the man I was talking to.

"You just got a free ticket and made money off of it. I want my money back for the ticket I just bought."

The man I was talking to succumbed. I got the free ticket. Therefore, I was happy.

I bought popcorn. I watched The Cove alone, in a full theater. I cried watching the dolphins getting stabbed. I was mad at the dolphins for being so naive. I felt like a dolphin, with a big stupid smile on my face.

After the movie, people tried to ask smart sounding questions to the director. I wanted to leave but didn't want to be seen walking out.

After the Q&A, everyone was talking about the "afterparty". I sat down and lit a cigarette. I wanted to watch people.

"Are you going to the after party?" the girl next to me said as she puffed her smoke. "We're with the directors. We're going to the 'afterparty' and then the 'afterafterparty'. You can 'tag along' with us."

I was confused, so I introduced myself.

"Hey guys, this is Sunny. She is gonna 'tag along' with us." she told her entourage.

I politely declined, but no one was listening to me. I walked away.

I saw the strange man who told me about the movie. He gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek. I felt dirty.

"Are you going to the after party?" he inquired.

"No." I said

"Take some of these flyers. We REALLY NEED to get the word out about this movie. We REALLY NEED to do something."

I took the flyers and proceeded to leave. The strange man gave me another hug and kiss goodbye. I was severely disappointed in myself for letting it happen again.

"You are very kissy." I stammered.

"We don't shake hands around here." the strange man assured me, as if I was now apart of something groundbreaking.
